Meet Mr. Heims

"Teaching should be such that what is offered is perceived as a valuable gift and not as a hard duty." -- Albert Einstein

"Good teachers do not just happen, they are the product of the highest personal motivation." --Dwight D. Einsenhower

Hi and welcome to my classroom web site!   I am currently teaching 4th - 8th graders in French Gulch.  I have lived in Redding for 5 years, and this fall is the start of my 16th year of teaching.  I enjoy teaching and my greatest satisfaction is seeing students succeed and watching them develop a love of learning.  This will be the fourth year that I will be Principal and Upper Grade Teacher (4th-8th) at French Gulch-Whiskeytown School.

I have a wonderful, supportive family, who live in Redding.  My wife is a 4th Grade Teacher and is very supportive. My boys are in Jr. High and High School. I am very fortunate. I also have dogs, fish, and a cat. I enjoy living on Stillwater Creek.

I grew up in Oregon and have also lived in Southern California, the North Coast of California, the Sierra's, and in the Klamath Basin. In Tulelake, I was the Biology, Art, Multimedia, Photography, Yearbook, Technology mentor, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade Teacher. I also have taught other multi-graded classes, inservices, outdoor school, and more. I spent years being co-director of an NSF Rural Systemic Initiative grant, evaluating various national educational programs, working on grants, and consulting.

I received a bachelors degree in Biology and a minor in Art from Humboldt State University. After working with various groups of kids that were less fortunate, I decided to get into education. I earned a Multiple Subject Professional Clear credential and later topped that off with a Language Development Specialist certification. My Masters degree is from California State University, Chico in Science Teaching. The thesis and focus areas were educational technology, rural schools, and professional development. My Administrative Credential was the last of the degree's and now I'm in the trenches learning from experience.

My interest are in photography, outdoor sports (snowboarding, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, biking, swimming, skiing, etc.). I enjoy making music and playing guitar. I am fortunate to be a part of Troop 37, as an Assistant Scoutmaster, and in the Order of the Arrow. My family is very special to me and I often wish I got to spend more time with them. Technology is a tool that I use, fairly extensively by many peoples standards, and it helps me communicate- or provides cool games. I like to work hard and play hard.

Thanks for stopping by my web site!

Kirk Heims
